மெய் எழுத்துக்கள் க்,ங்,ச்,ஞ்,ட்,ண்,த்,ந்,ப்,ம்,ய்,ர்,ல்,வ்,ழ்,,ள்,ற்,ன் ஆகியவை ஒலிப்பதற்கு அரை மாத்திரை அதவாது அரை வினாடி நேரம் எடுத்துக் கொள்கின்றன. அதனால் அவை ஒற்று என்று அழைக்கப் படுகின்றன.
மெய் எழுத்துக்கள் தங்களின் ஒலியைப் பொறுத்து வல்லினம், மெல்லினம்,இடையினம் என்று மூன்று வகைகளாகப் பிரிக்கப்படும். வல்லின எழுத்துக்கள் ஆறு. க்,ச்,ட்,த்,ப்,ற் வல்லின எழுத்துக்களாகும். இந்த எழுத்துக்களின் உச்சரிப்ப்பு வலுவான மூச்சுக்காற்று கொடுக்கும் அழுத்தத்தால் வலுமையாக இருக்கும். மெல்லின எழுத்துக்களும் ஆறு தான். ங்,ஞ்,ண்,ந்,ம்,ன் ஆகியவை மெல்லின எழுத்துகள் ஆகும். மெல்லிய ஓசைக் கொண்ட இந்த எழுத்துக்களை ஒலிக்க அதிக முயற்சி தேவையில்லை இடையின எழுத்துக்களும் ஆறு எழுத்துக்கள் தான். ய்,ர்,ல்,வ்,ழ்,ள் ஆகியவை இடையின எழுத்துக்கள். இந்த எழுத்துக்களை ஒலிக்கத் தேவையான முயற்சி நடுத்தரமாக இருக்கும். ஒலி ஓசையும் கடினமாகவோ அல்லது மென்மையாகவோ இல்லாமல் இடையில் வரும்.
The consonants க்,ங்,ச்,ஞ்,ட்,ண்,த்,ந்,ப்,ம்,ய்,ர்,ல்,வ்,ழ்,ள்,ற்,ன் are categorized on the basis of their sounds. They take half a second to pronounce. They are called ottru.
Apart from the letter duration the consonants are catagorised based on how hard or soft they pronunce. க்,ச்,ட்,த்,,ப்,ற் letters have a hardness to the sound when we pronounce them. They are called vallinam. ங்,ஞ்,ண்,ந்,ம்,ப் letters have a softness to the sound when we pronounce and does not require a lot of effort. They are called mellinam. The lettersய்,ர்,ல்,வ்,ழ்,ள் have a sound that is in between hardness and softness. They are called idaiyinam.

ஒரு சொல்லில் மெய்யெழுத்துக்கள் இரண்டு தொடர்ந்து வருவது மெய்மயக்கம் எனப்படும். ஒரு மெய்யெழுத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து அதேக் குடும்பத்தைச் சார்ந்த உயிர் மெய் எழுத்து சேர்ந்து வரும் போது அது உடனிலை மெய்மயக்கம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும்.

When two consonants follow each other in one word it is called mey mayakkan There are two types of mey mayaakkam. When the two consonants are of the same family they are called udanillai mey mayyakkam(The same consonants type) Look at the samples carefully. We can see the consonants are followed by the same family uirmey letters.

In conclusion, the consonants combine with the vowels to help form words with meaning, Since these words contains different kind of sounds, they can interact with vowels to create a new family of letters called uyir meiy. Uyir being the vowels the life of the language and meiy being the consonants the structure of the language.
