தமிழ்  மொழியின் சிறப்பு  ஒரு பொருளைக் கூற சில சமயங்களில் ஓர் எழுத்தேப்  போதுமானது. அஃதாவது எழுத்தின் வரிவடிவம்  அந்த எழுத்தை மட்டும் அடையாளம் காட்டாது ஒரு சொல்லாகவும்  இருக்கிறது.  அனைவருக்கும்  தெரிந்த அப்படிப் பட்ட சொற்கள் சில கை, தீ, பூ ஆகியவை. ஆனால் அவை எல்லாம் உயிர் மெய் எழுத்துக்கள். நாம் இதுவரை உயிர் எழுத்துக்களையும் மெய் எழுத்துக்களையும் மட்டுமே கற்றுள்ளோம்.  நம் மொழிக்கே உயிராகச் செயயல்படும் உயிரெழுத்துக்கள்     சொற்களாக செயல் பட்டிருக்கின்றனவா என்று அகராதிகளை ஆராய்ந்துப் பார்த்ததில் மன்னிரெண்டு  உயிரெழுத்துக்களில் “ஓள” என்ற உயிரெழுத்தைத் தவிர மற்ற எல்லா உயிரெழுத்துக்களும் ஆய்த எழுத்தும் செய்யுள்களில்  சொற்களாகப்  பொருள் கொடுத்து நிற்கின்றன.

1.  அ=  Lord Vishnu
2.  ஆ=   cow
3.  இ= now,or this moment
4.  ஈ= Fly  an insect
5.  உ = Siva Sakthi
6.  ஊ= permeate and also flesh or meat
7.  எ= உவர் நிலம், Soil with high ph
8.  ஏ= who, abundance,  ஐ= god or king, or beauty, minute, phlegm
9. ஒ=equal, conform, agree ,consent
10.  ஓ= flood gate  ஒள=
11.  ஃ=solitariness.

There are a lot of Tamil letters that  act as  words.     தீ means fire , கை means hand, பூmeans the flower.  These are words made out of the combined letter form of vowels and consonants. The above list shows how the vowels were used as one letter in ancient poems.

தமிழ் இலக்கணத்தின் மற்றுமொரு முக்கியமான பகுதி தமிழின் ஓசை வடிவமாகும். தமிழ் எழுத்துக்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் தனக்குரிய ஒலி வடிவைப் பெற்றுள்ளன. அதனால் எழுத்துக்கள் ஒலிப்பதற்கான நேர அளவீடை நாம் புரிந்து கொல்ளுதல் அவசியம். இந்த நேர அளவீடு தமிழ் இலக்கணத்தில் மாத்திரை எனப்படும் நாம் கை நொடிக்கும் நேரம் அல்லது இயல்பாக கண் சிமிட்டும் நேரம் ஒரு மாத்திரை என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

ஒலிப்பதற்கு ஒரு மாத்திரை அல்லது ஒருவினாடி எடுத்துக் கொள்ளும் எழுத்துக்கள் குறில் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். ஒரு எழுத்து ஒலிக்க இரண்டு வினாடிகள் எடுத்துக் கொண்டால் அவை நெடில் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். சில எழுத்துக்கள் ஒலிப்பதற்கு அரை வினாடியே எடுத்துக் கொள்ளும் அவை ஒற்று என்று அழைக்கப்படும், உயிரெழுத்துக்களில் அ, இ , உ, எ,ஒ என்ற எழுத்துக்கள் ஒலிப்பதற்கு ஒரு மாத்திரை அளவே எடுத்துக் கொள்வதால் அவை குறில் எழுத்துக்களாகும். ஆ, இ,ஊ,ஏ,ஐ,ஓ,ஒள என்ற எழுத்துக்கள் நெடில் என்று அழைக்கப்படும்.

Another important thing to understand in the Tamil grammar is the duration of the letters. Tamil being a phonetic language every sound has letter form representation. The English word syllable is the right way to explain how each letter of the Tamil language has its own sound. By learning the phonetic value of the letters one can easily start to read the language. The pronunciation of these letters depends upon how long it takes to make the particular sound. The unit of measure is called a Mathirai. A mathirai is the time it takes to snap your fingers or blink your eyes naturally. It is usually a second.

So when we take a second to sound a letterout, that letter is called kurrill. When we take two seconds to sound out a letter it is called neddill. Then there are some letters that needs only half a second to pronounce. These letters are called ottuRRu. In vowels, the letters அ, இ, உ, எ, ஒ are kurril. These five tamil letters are short vowels. These need only one second to pronounce. In vowels the letters ஆ, ஈ, ஊ, ஏ,ஐ, ஓ, ஒள are called neddill. These need two seconds to pronounce. These seven tamil letters arelong vowels.

கீழே உள்ளப் படங்களில் உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் ஒளிந்து உள்ளன. எழுத்துக்களை வண்ணம் தீட்டினால் ஒளிந்து இருக்கும் எழுத்தைக் கண்டு பிடிக்கலாம்  நாம் வாயால்  எழுத்துக்களைச உச்சரித்துக் கொண்டே  வர்ணம் தீட்டினால் எழுத்தின் வடிவமும் ஒலியும் மனதில் பதியும்.

உயிர் எழுத்துக்களின் வரிசையை நாம் நன்றாக நினைவு வைத்துக் கொள்ள  நாம்  பயிற்சி எடுக்க வேண்டும். கீழே உள்ள படத்தில் புள்ளிகளை இணைப்து ஒரு விளையட்டாக  உயிர் எழுத்துக்களின் வரிசையை நம் மனதில் பதிய வைக்கும்.

ஒலியளவு

தமிழில் ஒலி அளவு மாத்திரை என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

நாம் கண் இமைக்கும் நேரமோ கை நொடிக்கும் நேரமோ மாத்திரை என்று அழைக்கப் படுகிறது.அதாவது ஒரு வினாடி நேரத்தை மாத்திரை என்று அழைக்கின்றனர்.

ஒவ்வோரு தமிழ் எழுத்தும் அது ஒலிக்கும் கால அளவைக் கொ்ண்டு மூன்று வகையாகப் பிரிக்கப்படுகிறது.

தமிழ் உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள்  தங்கள் ஒலியை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு குறில் நெடில் என்றுப் பிரிக்கப்படுகிறது. ஒரு மாத்திரை அல்லது ஒரு வினாடி அளவே ஒலிக்கும் எழுத்துக்கள் குறில் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். அ,இ,உ,எ,ஒ  என்ற எழுத்துக்கள்  ஒலிக்க ஒரு வினாடி நேரமே ஆகும் அதனால் அவை குறில் எழுத்துக்கள் ஆகும்படத்தில் இவை பச்சை நிறத்தில் குறிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளன..

இரண்டு மாத்திரைகள் அல்லது இரண்டு வினாடிகள் நேரம் ஒலிக்கும் எழுத்துக்கள் நெடில் ஆகும்.ஆ,ஈ,ஊ, ஐ,ஓ,ஓள ஆகியவை  ஒலிக்க இரண்டு வினாடிகள் தேவை அதனால் அவை நெடில் எழுத்துக்கள் ஆகும். படத்தில் இவை நீல நிறத்தில் குறிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளன.

ஆய்த எழுத்தை நாம் உயிரெழுத்துக்களோடு சேர்ந்தே படிக்கிறோம். கற்றுக் கொள்கிறோம்.

In Tamil language the duration of the sound in a letter helps us categorize the letters. The word”mathirai” refers to the measurement of a sound. This word refers to the time it takes to blink the eye  or snap a finger,which usually takes one second.

 The twelve vowels can be divided based on the duration of their sound too, The short sound vowels are called kurril. The duration of the syllable is one second.அ, இ, உ, எ, ஒ are kurril. The long sounding letters are called nedil. The duration of the syllable is two seconds.ஆ, ஈ, ஊ, ஏ,ஐ, ஓ, ஒள are neddill because the duration of their sound is two seconds.

The letter Aydham  always accompanies  the tamil vowels we learn the vowel letters.
