செய்யுள் விளக்கம்:- ஒரு எழுத்து தனியாகவும் ஒன்றை ஒன்று தொடர்ந்தும் அமைந்து விளக்கம் தருமாயின் அது பதம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். பொருளைக் குறிக்கும் இச்சொற்கள் பகுபதம் பகுப்பதம் இரண்டு வகைகளாக அமையும். பிரித்து எழுத்தைக் கூடிய சொற்கள் பகுபதம் என்றும், பிரித்து எழுத முடியாத சொற்கள் பகாப்பதம் என்றும் இரண்டு வகைப் படும்.

சொல் என்று இக்காலத் தமிழில் அழைக்கப்படுவது செய்யுளிலும் இலக்கணத்திலும் பதம் என்ற வார்த்தையால் அறியப்படுகின்றது.தமிழில் விளக்கம் தரக்கூடிய ஓரே ஒரு எழுத்துக்கள். தமிழ் மொழியின் சிறப்பு. ஓரெழுத்துச் சொற்கள் பல மொழிகளில் இல்லை சொல். பதம் வார்த்தை என்று அழைக்கப்படும் சொல் மொழியின் முக்கியமான ஒரு அலகாக எல்லா மொழி இலக்கணத்திலும் உண்டு. அவை ஒரே ஓசை உடையதாகவும், பல ஓசைகள் உடையதாகவும் அமையும் இந்த ஓசைகளின் வரி வடிவமான எழுத்துக்களைக் கொண்ட தொகுப்பு. ஒரு விளக்கத்தைக் கொடுப்பதாகவோ, ஒரு பொருளைக் குறிப்பிடுவதாகவும் அமைந்தால் அது சொல் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது. தமிழ் எழுத்துக்கள் ஓசைகளின் வரிவடிவம் அதனால் நன்னூல், ஆசிரியர் ஒரு எழுத்தோ, எழுத்துக்கள் ஒன்றை ஒன்று தொடர்ந்தோ அமைந்து விளக்கம் கொடுக்கும் என்றால் அது சொல் என்று கூறுகின்றார். அவர் அடுத்தபடியாக பிரித்துப் பொருள் கொடுக்கும் சொற்கள்(பகுபதம்), பிரித்தால் விளக்கம் இழந்து நிற்கும் பிரிக்கப்படாத சொல்லாகவும் (பகாப்பதம்) என இரண்டாகப் பிரிக்கப்படலாம் என்கின்றார். பகுபதத்திற்கு உதாரணமாக ஒரு மணி மாலையை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளலாம். மாலையில் உள்ள மணிகளைத் தனித்து எடுக்க முடியும். அது போல பகு பதத்தில் உள்ள சொற்களை பிரித்து தனியே ஒரு பொருள் கொள்ள முடியும். பகாப்பதம் என்பது ஒரு பொடி போன்றது. அந்தப் பொடியிலிருந்து ஒரு துகளைத் தனியாக எடுத்துத் தனியாக எப்படிப் பயன்படாதோ அது போல பகாப்பதத்திலிருந்து சொற்களைத் தனியாகப் பிரிக்க முடியாது. பகு பதம் பகாப்பதம் என்பவற்றின் எடுத்துக்காட்டைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளும் முன் புரிந்து கொள்ள தமிழ் எழுத்திலக்கணத்தின் சில தன்மைகளையும் சிரிந்து பார்க்க வேண்டும். பகுபதத்திலிர்ந்து வரும் சொற்கள் ஒரு பொருளைக் குறிப்பிடிவதாகவோ, அகராதியில் வரும் விளக்கத்தைத் தாங்கி வரலாம். அதே போல தமிழ் எழுத்து இலக்கணத்தின் பல கூறுகளைக் கொண்டும் ஒரு பகுபதம் அமையலாம்.. ஒரு சொல்லைத் தனியாகவும் வாக்கியங்களாகவும் அமைக்கலாம்.

The explanation of the poem: A letter can give a meaning by a standing alone or form a meaning by continuously standing next to each other. These clusters of letters that give a meaning can be classified into two parts as indivisible word (pagappatham) and divisible word (paguppatham).

The word “sol’ is known as patham in Tamil classical poems and grammar. The specialty of the Tamil language is that, it has words made up of single letter. It is not so in many languages. A word is an unit for every language. When a sound of cluster of sounds denotes meaning it is considered a word. In Tamil all the sounds have a written letter representation. So according to the author of nannool pavanathi muniver when a single letter or a letters stand continuously to give a meaning or a explanation it is defined as patham or word. These words can be divisible or indivisible words. Divisible words can be explained using a bead garland. One can take the beads out of the garland and re use them separately. Similarly when a word is devided in tow a it gives two meanings, like the compound words of English. Indivisible words are like a powder, that you cannot separate each other to get two different meaning. Before we go through the examples, it is crucial to know that, the Tamil words may have two kinds of meaning, They can carry the meaning of dictionary, and also a meaningful category of Tamil grammar.
