ஆங்கில உயிர் எழுத்துகளின் குறுகிய ஒலியையும் நீள ஒலிகளைச் சுட்டிக்காட்ட மொத்தம் ஐந்து எழுத்துகளே உள்ளன. அதனால் குறுகிய ஒலியைக் குறிக்க ă,ĕ,ĭ,ŏ,ŭ என்று குறிக்கப் படுகிறது. அதேபோல நீண்ட ஒலியைக் குறிக்க •ā •ī•ō •ū •ȳஎழுத்துகளின் மேல் குறிகள் உள்ளன, ஆனால் தமிழ் மொழியில் குறுகிய உயிர் எழுத்துகளுக்கும், நெடிய உயிர் எழுத்துக்கும் வரிவடிவிலேயே வித்யாசம் இருக்கிறது. இப்படி ஒலிகளை வேறுபடுத்திக் காட்டுவதன் முக்கிய காரணம் மொழியைச் சரியாக உச்சரிக்க ஒருவருக்குத் தெரிந்து இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பது தான்.
