எழுத்துக்களே சொல்லின் அடிப்படை ஒரு எழுத்தோ எழுத்துக்களின் தொகுப்போ பொருளை உணர்த்தும்போது அது சொல் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். எழுத்துக்கள் சேர்ந்து ஒரு பொருளையும் தராவிட்டால் அது சொல்லாகாது. சொல் எனறு பதம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படும். தமிழின் ஒரு எழுத்துப் பொருளைத் தருமானால் அது ஒரெழுத்துச் சொல்(fly) பூ(flower) கை(hand) என்ற எழுத்துக்கள் பொருளைத் தருகின்றன
பகுபதம் பகாபதம் என்று சொல் பிரிக்கப்படும் ஒரு சொல்லைப் பிரித்துப் பார்த்தாலும் பொருள் தருமாயின் அது பகுபதம். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக இருபது(twenty) என்ற சொல்லைப் பிரிக்கும்போது இரு(two)+ பத்து(ten) இரு வேறு பொருள் தரும் சொற்களாக இருக்கிறது.
ஒரு சொல்லைப் பிரித்துப் பார்க்கும்போது பொருள் தராவிட்டால் அது பகாபதம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். ஊர்(village)கல்(stone)என்ற சொற்களைப் பிரிக்கும்போது ஒரு பொருளையும் தராது.
இலக்கியத்தில் தமிழ் சொற்கள் நான்கு வகையாகப் பிரிக்கப் படும். இயற்சொல், திரிசொல், திசைச் சொல், வட சொல்.ப இயற் சொல் என்பது பஇயல்பாகவே தமிழ்பேசும் ஒருவரால் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும்.தமிழை நன்கு கற்றவர்களுகே விளங்கும் சொற்கள் திரிசொல் எனபடும் பல பொருளைத் தரும் ஒரு சொற்களும் ஒரு பொருளைத் தரும் பல சொற்களும் திரிசொல் என்று அறியப்படும். தமிழ் நாட்டை ஒட்டியுள்ளபலவேறு திசைகளிலிருந்து வந்தச் சொற்கள் திசைச் சொல் என்று அழைக்கப்படும். பவட மொழியிலிருந்து வந்த தமிழில் கலந்த சொற்கள் வடசொல் என்று அழைக்கப்படும்.
சொற்களின் பயன் பாட்டைப் பொறுத்து அவை பெயர் சொல், வினைச் சொல், இடைச் சொல் உரிச்சொல் என்று நான்கு வகைப்படும்.
பெயரைக் குறிக்கும் சொல் பெயர்ச் சொல்லாகும். செய்யும் செயலைக் குறிக்கும் சொல் வினைச் சொல் ஆகும். பெயர்ச்சொல்லும் வினைச் சொல்லையும் இடமாகக் கொண்டு ஒரு சொல்லை அடுத்தச் சொல்லோடு இணைத்துப் பொருள் தர உதவுவது இடைச் சொல்லாகும். பெயர்ச் சொல் வினைச் சொல் இரண்டையும் சார்ந்து அவற்றின் தன்மையை விளக்கிக் கூறுவது உரிச்சொல் ஆகும்.
Letter are the basis of a words. A word is a letter, or combination of letters that have meaning. When a letter of combination does not give meaning, then it is not a word.There are four types of tamil words based on their useage in a sentence. They are part of the speech. பெயர்ச் சொல்(noun), வினைச் சொல்(verb) இடைச் சொல்((conjuctions), உரிச் சொல்(adjecctive, or adverb).
There are lot of one letter words in Tamil. For example ஈ((fly) பூ(flower) கை(hand) are letters that have meaning to them.
The word also can be called as patham. There are two types of words. Words that cannot be divided with out destroying the meaning is called pagaapatham. (பகாபதம்) ஊர்(village)கல்(stone) These words cannot be divided. If divided it won’t give any meaning. Word that can be divided into two different words with out destroying the meaning is called paggupatham.( பகுபதம்) For examples இருபது(twenty) இரு(two)+ பத்து(ten) the word irrupathu gives meanings of two and ten when it is divided in to two different words.
In literature use four different kinds of words are used. இயற் சொல்,(Iiyarr sol) the words natural to people of Tamil nadu that everybody can understand. திரி சொல்( thiri sol)words that can give many meaning, or many words that give one meaning. Depending upon their useage in the sentences the words are catagorised as peyyar sol பெயர் சொல்(noun) vinnai sol வினைச் சொல்(verb)iddai sol இடைச் சொல ( interconnecting words) and உரிச்சொல் uriccol.( adjectives or adverbs).
When a word refers to name or thing it is peyyyar sol. Word describing the actions are called vinnai sol. When a word joins the noun or a verb to connect the words in a sentence it is called called idai sol. When a word is added to noun or a verb and describes them it is uricchol.
